Wine & Chocolate – Good For The Body, Great For The Soul!October 28, 2014
There’s plenty of good news out there for those of us with a love of wine and chocolate. Medical research has shown us that these “naughty” indulgences may actually be rather “nice” for our bodies after all.
Chocolate – particularly dark chocolate high in cocoa – is thought to be one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet. It is also a good source of soluble fibre and contains important minerals such as Iron, Magnesium, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Potassium, Phosphorus and Selenium. Among the many benefits of cocoa are lower cholesterol, healthier skin and improved brain function.
Research has suggested that wine – particularly red wine – is also an excellent source of antioxidants through a substance called resveratrol which, along with moderate amounts of alcohol, may improve the function of the heart, reduce clotting, lower blood pressure and improve the body’s ability to use insulin.
All of this comes with a strong recommendation to consume in moderation of course.
But since when did we need this kind of justification to enjoy a little of what we love? Satisfaction of our senses goes hand in hand with a feeling of wellbeing too, and we all know that a lovely taste experience leaves us with a smile on our faces!
When I first came up with the idea of doing wine and chocolate tastings at the Stomp cellar door, my conservative winemaking husband Michael was aghast. His classical training taught him that only savoury dishes should accompany his quality dry table wines. However, after lots of painstaking research (really, it was hard work!) I was able to convince him that the right chocolate, tasted alongside the right wine, was nothing short of heaven on earth. Believe me we tried many, many combinations of chocolate and wine before coming up with our absolute favourite matches.
So now we have taken the concept to what we feel is its natural evolution, offering four chocolates matched with four wines at our cellar door for the price of only $15 per head.
This wickedly delightful experience includes four gourmet handcrafted chocolates matched
with four Stomp Wines and a palate cleansing 250ml bottle of sparkling mineral water.
• Stomp Sparkling Verdelho matched with a White Chocolate Mango Cup
• Stomp 2013 Chardonnay matched with a White Chocolate Pistachio Leaf
• Stomp 2014 Rose matched with a Milk Chocolate Crunch
• Stomp Tawny matched with a Dark Chocolate Chilli Truffle
All our chocolates are handcrafted by local chocolatiers at The Hunter Valley Chocolate
Company in Pokolbin. All our grapes are grown on our vineyard onsite and are magically
transformed into wine by ourselves – husband and wife team – winemaker, Michael and his
cellar hand, Meredith (that’s me).
So, why not pop into the cellar and join me in some painstaking food and wine matching research?
